I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No. 76 of the 13th ultimo, and to inform you that the Admiralty letter of the 26th April, 1901, a copy of which was transmitted to Sir Henry Blake under cover of your Despatch No. 158 of the 6th May, 1901, has received careful consideration, and that in the opinion of my Government there is no objection to the adoption of the course proposed in paragraph 4 of that letter.

2. I hope, however, that the proposal suggested in my Despatch No. 95 of the 20th ultimo will before long meet with your approval, and that the Marines who are at present serving as Constables in the Hongkong Police Force will be enabled to receive their permanent discharge from the Marines' Service.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,

...

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

Mr. J. Gascoigne

Major-General, Administering the Government.
